Over the past two years we’ve seen a growing number of unsheltered people sleeping on our sidewalks, stairways, in the park, and in other public spaces.
DHIC along with other District 8 (D8) community groups has been working with Supervisor Rafael Mandelman and his staff. We help identify “hot spots” for services and people most in need of shelter and services. The City has increased the level of services to our area – with mixed results. Dolores Park is clean and not experiencing encampments. However, the surrounding areas have had an influx of campers and group encampments, along with people openly using drugs and/or in mental distress.
Homelessness in our community is getting worse, not better. This needs to change.
Sleeping outside is not safe, healthy, or compassionate. Our community and our unsheltered deserve better. DHIC and other D8 leaders are organizing a Public Forum on homelessness. Our ask of our City officials: implement programs more quickly to shelter those on the streets. We expect concrete plans and next steps coming out of the Forum.
The Forum will be held in mid-April (date TBA) at 6pm at the Children’s Day School (19th & Dolores Streets.) More details later in March.
We need shelter and treatment for everyone and an end to sleeping on our streets.
Our ask of you: attend the Forum and bring your friends and neighbors. We also welcome your help – in small or larger ways. For more information, email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. Thank you.
